Meet Photographers and Directors Dom and Jarrod (Little Outdoor Giants)
We’re getting back into gear this Spring with a new blog featuring the amazingly talented duo Dom & Jarrod aka Little Outdoor Giants.
Dom and Jarrod have been working together for over a decade. Little Outdoor Giants first started on a road trip in Jarrod’s 1971 Ford truck. With no itinerary and an open road, they began their journey of creating authentic and beautiful work. They’ve shot a wide range of clients, from global companies like Nike to non-profit conservation organizations. Their passion for telling stories and genuine interest in their subjects shines through their work and brings a special quality to their photos and videos.
We recently worked with Dom and Jarrod for a Dos Equis Shoot and they were a blast to work with. Come see why Little Outdoor Giants is one of our favorite duos to work with!
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR ART AND HOW YOU GOT INVOLVED WITH COMMERCIAL WORK AND PHOTOGRAPHY?
We were both independent photographers working our way up the ladder and assisting and shooting small ad jobs when we decided to team up to form Giants. We loved the freelance lifestyle, the travel, the variety of projects, the feeling of being on set, and the sense of shooting and crafting an entire campaign or project for our clients. There’s nothing quite like it.
WHAT WAS A PIVOTAL MOMENT IN YOUR CAREER?
The road trip where we teamed up to form Giants. Jarrod bought a 71’ Ford out in Montana, and Dom joined him on a winding and slow drive back to New England. It was on this trip that we shot as a special project together that we decided we could form a duo and shoot all assignments together, the rest is history as that was a decade ago now!
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE SET TO WORK ON AND WHY?
We always tell this when meeting new folks, but we absolutely love the variety you get as an advertising photographer. There was one time a few years ago where at the beginning of the week we were in LA shooting a billboard campaign for Michelob Ultra with the whole full-scale production of 50 people on set, shut down LA streets with Police detail etc. and at the end of the week we were in the wilderness of Maine with just us, the client and one assistant, shooting sunrises and sunsets for a non-profit. We love that each production is so wildly different but fulfilling in it’s own way.
WHAT IS ONE OF THE PROUDEST MOMENTS IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
For sure seeing our work as a billboard, a cover or in Times square never gets old, those are moments that are highlights that we try to fully appreciate at the time. But a career in photography is all about stacking lots of proud moments together, winning a job, getting on a plane for a fun shoot, crew dinners with great creatives, it’s a helluva gig if you can put up with the tough stuff and last in this industry.
WHAT ARE SOME OTHER THINGS YOU ENJOY WHEN YOU AREN’T ON SET?
We love shooting personal work. Every time we travel for a job we make it a point to stay a few days and put together a test shoot or shoot something personal that means something to us. You always gotta be making new work, shooting new things, and sharing that with your network.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING ON SET?
The focus that comes with knowing what you have to do that day, but the mystery of that magic moment that wasn’t quite planned for that you see happening. That, and of course the rad folks we get to work with. As freelancer’s we really only get together for short bursts of time, but it feels like summer camp coming together with all our creative and production friends for projects. We never see everyone enough, but hopefully we see them again down the line on the next project.
WHAT DOES #PONYUP MEAN TO YOU?
Well, we’ve been lucky enough to shoot with Plaid Pony and have a few meals with the Plaid Pony crew, and it’s always been in Texas, so for us, it’s a little bit Pony, lil’ bit Texas and a whole lotta production. Stacy and the team CRUSHED a logistically heavy 2 day, 2 location, 8 talent, bajillion product shoot with us in and around Austin Texas in the summer sun of August last year. Wholey-mole-guacamole if that ain’t #ponyup we don’t know what is.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
We just wrapped a rad shoot with Fireball, another with Dexter Knives and a fun food editorial for a local magazine. This week we're brainstorming creative for a shoot with an eccentric kids camp in Vermont thats in the early stages.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOUR FANS MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?
Jarrod and Dom are NOT actual blood brothers, though they might as well be at this point.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU PROVIDE FOR FUTURE PHOTOGRAPHER?
Simple, if you wanna do this, just shoot new work and share new work, always and on repeat. That’s all there is to this gig, and frankly, that’s all you can do, the rest is outta your control. Cheers- Giants
